Key Engineering & Design Features:
Every element of the VCSmed ZD Frame is engineered for accuracy, patient safety, and surgical workflow efficiency.
Center-of-Arc Principle
Ensures that any trajectory through the arc always passes through the same target point, providing nearly unlimited access to all intracranial regions and free trepanation point selection.
Single-Point Fixation
Easy one-point-fixation feature enables surgeons to transition quickly between target point review and surgery, reducing procedure time and increasing workflow efficiency.
8 Mounting Positions
Up to 8 different mounting positions on the ring offer maximum variability for the selection of target and access point, adapting to diverse patient anatomies.
MRI Artifact-Free Ring Options
Available in both Ceramic Ring (zero interference, zero MRI artifacts, half-open for awake surgery) and Titanium Ring (ultra-lightweight, MRI artifact-free) variants.
IPS Planning Software Integration
Fully compatible with inomed iPS 3D planning software. CT/MRI image fusion, anatomical atlas overlay, and direct coordinate transfer to the stereotactic system eliminate manual errors.
Microdrive Compatible
Works seamlessly with the inomed MicroDrive (50 µm resolution, haptic feedback) and the ISIS MER system for micro-electrode recording during Deep Brain Stimulation procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common clinical and technical questions about the ISIS MER System, as asked by neurosurgeons and neuromonitoring teams across India.
What is the VCSmed ZD Frame Stereotactic System used for?
The ZD Frame is used for stereotactic neurosurgical procedures including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), brain biopsy, functional neurosurgery, and stereotactic target point planning. It enables surgeons to precisely target intracranial structures using the center-of-arc principle, ensuring nearly unlimited access to all intracranial regions with free choice of the trepanation point.
Is the ZD Frame compatible with MRI scanning?
Yes. The ZD Frame is fully MRI-compatible. The ceramic ring variant offers zero interference and zero artifacts in MRI — critical for awake surgical procedures as its half-open design does not interrupt the patient’s visual field. The titanium ring is also artifact-free in MRI and is significantly lighter than the ceramic option. Both systems are also compatible with CT and X-ray imaging.
What is the center-of-arc principle and why does it matter?
The center-of-arc principle is the geometric basis of the ZD Frame system. It ensures that any trajectory described by the aiming arc always passes through the same target point at the center of the arc. This enables the surgeon to adjust the approach angle without changing the target, providing nearly unlimited access to all intracranial regions and allowing free selection of the trepanation point. This significantly simplifies intraoperative repositioning and reduces surgical risk.
What planning software is compatible with the ZD Frame?
The inomed iPS Planning Software is fully compatible with the ZD Frame. It is a 3D stereotactic planning system characterised by high-quality imaging, CT/MRI image fusion, and anatomical atlas projection over patient data. After finalising the plan, calculated coordinates are transmitted automatically to the stereotactic system. The iPS software supports all stereotactic treatments and is compatible with most stereotactic frames on the market.
What is the difference between the RM System and the ZD Frame?
Both are manufactured by VCSmed India in partnership with inomed Germany. The RM System (Riechert-Mundinger) uses a 3-point fixation based on the polar coordinate system with an aiming bow that serves as a probe holder — known for maximum precision in functional neurosurgery. The ZD Frame (Zamorano-Duchovny) uses single-point fixation with the center-of-arc principle, offering easier handling and quick transition between review and surgery. Both are suitable for biopsy and deep brain stimulation — the choice depends on surgeon preference and procedural requirements.
