Spine surgery
Spine surgery is a cross-disciplinary field that encompasses neurosurgical, orthopaedic and trauma surgery aspects. Ideally, all specialist disciplines work together to provide the best possible treatment.
As the spine is an organ that is exposed to strong torsional, tensile and compressive loads and has many joints, the function-preserving treatment of spinal diseases is a challenge. Intraoperatively, muscles, vessels, bones, cartilage and nerve tissue are located in a very confined space, so special care is required to avoid putting pressure on the nerves during milling and punching work, for example, and thus causing injury. Correction of spinal misalignments can lead to intraoperative tension damage to vessels and nerve structures, so the procedure should be performed under careful monitoring.
The bony spine protects the spinal cord. Protect the spinal cord and spinal nerves during surgery with intraoperative neuromonitoring.
Thanks to the monitoring of the motor pathways by EMG and MEPs and somatosensory pathways by SEPs as well as direct stimulation of nerve roots, neuronal functions can be monitored during a surgical procedure, e.g. during complex straightening surgery for scoliosis.
The ISIS IOM system is specially designed for these tasks and can monitor a wide range of electrophysiological signals. Intermittent or continuous SEPs, MEPs and EMGs can be recorded.
When operating on tumours in the cervical and superior thoracic areas, it is also possible to record D-waves. This method enables MEPs to be directly recorded from the spinal cord and further information about irritations to be collected. This reduces the risk of malfunctions.
The C2 Xplore and its Spine software combine all functions for precise and efficient neuromonitoring during pedicle screw placement. The system and the associated software offer an established and reliable tool for spine stabilisation and are specifically designed to support surgeons in implant placement. This ensures that the nerve roots and spinal cord are protected, minimising the risk of postoperative functional deficits.
In addition, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring is also used for the following therapies:
- Lateral access to the spine
- Spinal cord detethering
- Selective dorsal rhizotomy
Our products help to recognise when and where nerve structures are at risk, thus enabling particularly gentle surgical treatment. Easy handling and customised solutions ensure efficient spinal monitoring.
